2013 Workshops:

iPhoneography: The Mobile Masters Sessions (WA)

Wednesday, January 30
8:00am – 9:00pm

Dan Marcolina, Koci Hernandez, Karen Devine, Cindy Patrick, Richard Gray, Jack Hollingsworth, Stephanie Roberts, Russell Brown, Julianna Kost, Glyn Evany,Marty Yawnick, Knox Bronson, Nate Park, and more!

Mobile photography is radically changing the photographic landscape. A truly remarkable range of iPhoneography has emerged from around the globe in just the last 2 years. Having a camera always in your pocket plus the inexpensive, organic discovery process of working with apps, along with the instantaneous sharing of visual ideas via social networks like Instagram is exponentially evolving the medium. A large underground of amazing artists are inventing new ways of image creation. In addition an explosion of apps, equipment, books and output options have added to the fire.

Our objective with this daylong session is to unveil and celebrate all aspects of this rapidly growing art form based around Apples iPhone. We will be featuring over 12 of the most notable names in the movement. You will learn why iPhoneography is different from traditional photography in 3 unique ways: Organically Shooting, “APPing” and Sharing. How to get unique perspectives and story telling with Street photography, how to combining apps to create artistic images beyond what has ever been possible and how to share smarter and get noticed in Instagram.

We will also explore the gadgets and services that are emerging around iPhoneography. Hear from the top bloggers, authors and educators in the space to get the complete perspective of what is happening now and what the possibilities are in the future.

This will be an event to celebrate the start of a new year and a new chapter in photographs history, the Mobile Movement. Full session details and speaker information can be found here.

iOS Development for Beginners (WC)

Wednesday, January 30
10:00am – 5:00pm

Matthew Purcell, Teacher, Canberra Grammar School

Ever wanted to learn iOS app development but don’t know where to start? The popularity of iOS apps has taken the world by storm – the 650,000 apps available on the App Store, combined with over 30 billion downloads, highlight the popularity of this platform. Many people have some great app ideas, but much fewer people have the technical knowledge and expertise to take that idea through to producing an actual app. While iOS app development is technical, it is also certainly within the reach of those who have the interest and perseverance. This session will be run by Matthew Purcell, a qualified and experienced IT teacher from Canberra Grammar School in Australia who wrote and teaches the school’s Year 10 iPhone and iPad Application Development course. Matthew is also an award-winning app developer, having won the 2012 hack::Brisbane competition for his iPhone application Bike Brisbane. He will be joined in the session with students of his Year 10 class to provide attendees with opportunities for additional help throughout the day. All attendees should have a MacBook with the latest version of Xcode installed (available for free from the Mac App Store). Familiarity with basic programming concepts (such as classes, objects, selection, iteration, etc.) is assumed. For those who are a bit rusty on these concepts, pre-reading references will be provided ahead of the workshop so that you can re-familiarise yourself with these aspects.

Multipurposing Design – Dreamweaver, InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop: Web and Print for Mobile and eReader: Putting Adobe Creative Suite to Work Across Mediums(WE)

Wednesday, January 30
10:00am – 5:00pm

Andrew Shalat, CEO, Shalat Design

Our technology has done a good job of messing with those of us known as designers. Time was when a graphic designer only had to worry about what kind of paper, how many inks and when she had to get up for a press check. But our technology has balkanized the design industry. It’s not just one medium anymore. Now we have to think about deployment to the web, to the iPhone, and to the iPad, not to forget Kindle and iBooks. Repurposing material for myriad delivery systems is not just required, it’s demanded. And to be frank about it, it can be a drag.

This workshop will make inroads into how to get a handle on repurposing, and managing your design from print and web to mobile to eReader. We’ll start the morning with the web. Using Dreamweaver’s new fluid layout options, we’ll create a simple website in Dreamweaver that will work automatically on computer, iPhone and iPad.

The afternoon we’ll take on the task of designing for eReaders, and discuss the concessions, compromises and clever innovations you can use to make your print design work for the eReader platform.
This is an intermediate – advanced level technical workshop. Attendees should have at least a basic knowledge of CSS, HTML and Dreamweaver, as well as familiarity with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

What you will learn:

  • Unlocking the power of Creative Suite’s new features.
  • How to use Dreamweaver’s Fluid Layout controls to create multiple platform web design for computer, iPhone and iPad.
  • How to set up and deploy designs for eReader platforms in a basic way, from InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Dreamweaver repurposing to Mobile
  • Preparing InDesign Docs for eReaders

Apple Deployment In-Depth (WG)

Wednesday, January 30
10:00am – 5:00pm

Arek Dreyer, President, Dreyer Network Consultants
Kevin White, Apple Authorized Tranier, Macjutsu, Inc.

Apple’s iOS devices have ushered in a new era of computing that prioritizes ultra-easy-to-use interfaces in an ultra-portable format. Further, as the working population becomes increasingly technology-savvy, we have seen a huge increase in bring your own device (BYOD) workplaces. This has resulted in a significant influx of Apple devices into organizations both large and small.

Despite this, many administrators are still unfamiliar with appropriate techniques for deploying and managing iOS devices and BOYD systems. It would seem that many administrators are still trying to apply legacy PC-style management practices to contemporary Apple devices. However, just as mobile devices are heralding in the new “post-PC” era for end users, administrators likewise need to forget their PC-style management practices. It’s time to welcome the brave new world of iOS and BYOD management.
This session will focus on all aspects of iOS deployment from planning and initial setup to over-the-air management and app installation. You will also learn how many of the same techniques can also be applied to management of Mac OS X devices. Throughout this session techniques will be discussed for both single-user deployments (e.g. an individual’s iPhone) and shared-use deployments (e.g. a K-12 lab of shared iPads). Further, this session will primarily focus on native Apple-sourced tools and solutions, but will also cover third-party items when appropriate.

XCode for IT Admins: Exploring iOS and Cocoa (WH)

Wednesday, January 30
10:00am – 5:00pm

John Soward, Research Initiatives Manager, Dataseam
John Turner, Consultant, Assistronics

Get your code on. Learn the basics of App development using Xcode. After a quick introduction to Xcode and some core concepts, we’ll start building an App, and progressively add features and complexity, working through some of the tools in the Apple developer’s tool chest, as well as tackling a few commonly desired tasks, such as interfacing with enterprise web services and sending push notifications.

To get the most out of the session, attendees should bring an OSX system running 10.7 or 10.8 with the most current version of Xcode from the App store installed. A developer account and iOS device is optional. Basic programming knowledge is expected — variables, arrays, branching, looping, simple data structures, syntax, etc. Knowledge of Object Oriented programming concepts as well as the syntax of a C-like language (C++, java, php, perl) will also be helpful.
