Luis Perez, Graduate Assistant,  iTeach Initiative, University of South Florida College of Education
On the iPad, the free iBooks app from Apple supports a new generation of textbooks that can include embedded images, audio, video, presentations, review widgets, and 3D simulations. Through the variety of widgets you can embed in them, these books bring content to life for learners in ways the printed page never could.  The iBooks app also includes accessibility features that support the needs of a wide range of learners by allowing them to customize the appearance of text,  take notes, highlight key passages and use text to speech. In this session, participants will learn how to build their own iBooks textbook with the free iBooks Author software for the Mac. They will also learn about best practices for ensuring their textbooks are accessible to all learners.

10:15am – 10:55am | Tech That! Extending Student’s Digital Environment into the Classroom
Robert Craven, Director, Technology and Media Services, Fullerton School District
Our lives are digital. Outside the classroom we all know students, teachers, parents, nearly everyone is living in a digital world where information, communication, and connections are instantaneous. Yet, walk into many classrooms and the signal is all analog. Entering the school a student’s digital experience gets shut down and replaced with something they can’t recognize. It’s time to extend the digital environment we all live in to the classroom and engage students on their ground.

Discover how administration are working to create a digital learning environment for students, while providing the support, infrastructure, time, and resources for teachers to effectively integrate technology into the classroom. This session will focus on methods educational leaders can use to promote development of true digital learners, educators and leaders.

11:00am – 11:40am | Why Not? Views from a 22nd Century Perspective
Mark Dohn, Technology Integration, Mobile Learning, and Curriculum Design Consultant
For some time now education has explored the 21st century classroom. Yet as we talk about this wondrous future, many teachers find themselves in an educationally stagnant environment locked into standards, pacing plans and testing. How and what can we do to make the shift to being effective teachers in the 21st Century? I will share insight, stories and successes that invite you, too, to step out of the zones that hold us back.

1:30pm – 2:10pm | Accessing Abilities
Mark Coppin, Director of Assistive Technology, Anne Carlsen Center
Accessibility is so important for children with diverse learning needs. However it is more than accessibility, it is accessing abilities. It is about providing solutions that can make a difference in a child’s life. By finding the right tools and solutions, we can provide them with the opportunity to access their education, their world, and their dreams! This presentation will demonstrate how assistive technologies along with Apple devices have opened up a world of opportunities for some amazing students. We will see how these technologies can provide students with the opportunity to take control of their education and their lives. These amazing students will inspire you to find the tools and solutions that will make a difference in the lives of the students you work with.
