STATEMENT OF IDG WORLD EXPO REGARDING MACWORLD/IWORLD

October 14, 2014

We are announcing today that Macworld/iWorld is going on hiatus, and will not be taking place as planned in 2015. Our MacIT event, the world’s premiere event for deploying Apple in the enterprise, will continue next year with details to be announced in the coming weeks.

Since 1985, Macworld events have brought together a community to celebrate the incredible innovations that Apple has brought into the world, shining a spotlight on the developers who add value to the user’s experience in infinite ways. As Apple products and the related ecosystem have changed, so has the marketplace, and we are proud to have played a part in that evolution. Literally thousands of companies and hundreds of products have come to market at Macworld, and countless professional relationships have been forged. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Apple community for allowing us to host these events and be a part of the incredible story that is the Apple market.

We are committed via our MacIT event to bringing together the product developers innovating with enterprise iOS and OS X based solutions, and the growing legion of professionals empowering their organizations through these tools. We are exploring exciting new partnerships, venues and delivery opportunities through which MacIT can continue to serve this market, and we look forward to announcing our plans for this event within the next few months.

Breakthrough Innovation was on Display during the 30th Year Celebration of Macworld/iWorld

Framingham, Mass. and San Francisco––March 31, 2014––IDG World Expo concluded another successful Macworld/iWorld event on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Moscone Center North in San Francisco. The world’s largest gathering of Apple fans, enthusiasts and industry watchers, featured more than 50 tech talks covering buzzed-about topics like Bitcoin, NSA, wearables, iOS, OS X Mavericks and iCloud and showcased hundreds of exhibitors and developers with new-to-market products, apps, tools and technologies including Logbar’s Ring, FLIR ONE, Lumo Lift and others.

“Macworld/iWorld 2014 was an inspiring showcase of new innovations, insight and learning opportunities that gave attendees a glimpse of where technology will take us,” said Paul Kent, vice president and general manager of Macworld/iWorld. “When you have thousands of Apple ecosystem stakeholders together under one roof, you can’t help but be overwhelmed by the passion, collaboration and ingenuity that underpins both the outstanding sessions we host, and the cutting-edge technology displayed on the Expo Hall floor. With the pace of innovation today, we cannot wait to see what Macworld/iWorld 2015 has in store.”

Macworld/iWorld 2015 will take place from March 12-14 in San Francisco. The event promises to highlight the latest in hardware, software, apps and content focused on enhancing the user experience with Apple products.

During Macworld/iWorld 2014, the Expo Hall was buzzing with Apple-product fans where hundreds of exhibitors and developers showcased the latest in wearables to IoT technologies, to the best in apps, software and accessories for the Mac, iPhone, iPod and iPad. The show floor also included Appalooza, where developers showcased hundreds of the latest iOS and OS X app creations.

“We are a small group of engineers without a lot of tradeshow experience but we were astonished by the success and demand we’ve experienced with Grip&Shoot at Macworld/iWorld,” said Bob Zajeski, vice president of engineering at Grip&Shoot. “2014 was our first year at Macworld/iWorld and on day-one, within two hours we sold out of our Grip&Shoot and had to overnight more product for our Apple fans. Macworld/iWorld exceeded our expectations and with this positive experience under our belt we are excited to return in 2015. If you are an early stage, nimble company – Macworld/iWorld is a great place to gain exposure and interact with the early adopters and technology savvy crowds that Macworld/iWorld draws.”

Some attendees and exhibitors walked away this year with prizes, bragging rights or both. More than 1,200 attendees completed the iBeacon-powered scavenger hunt and were entered into a drawing to win a MacMania cruise to the British Isles. Macworld/iWorld and SF New Tech created the first-ever competition that focuses solely on products emerging out of the Apple ecosystem with 6 About to Break. During a live competition on Second Stage, the audience and a panel of all-star judges selected Avegant Glyph and Petcube as co-winners. Additionally, Macworld Magazine announced the standout products from Macworld/iWorld with its Best of Show 2014 winners, which included Akitio Palm RAID, Arcsoft Simplicam, Binary Formations Chore-inator, BusyContacts, Cloak, Creaceed Emulsio, FLIR ONE, Goal Zero Sherpa 100 Power Pack, Kamino, Kanex Thunderbolt Adapters and Sonoma Wire Works Guitar Jack Stage.

Outside the Expo Hall, conference attendees participated in learning opportunities and attended sessions from industry luminaries with more than 50 tech talks covering topics like Bitcoin, NSA, wearables, iOS, OS X Mavericks and iCloud. These themes carried through to the State of Apple and Age of Context keynotes.

Jason Snell from IDG kicked-off Macworld/iWorld with State of Apple 2014. Apple industry watchers and experts from Creative Strategies, More.com, Mashable and Wired came together for an animated discussion on the current state and the future of Apple and its growing marketplace. Additionally, tech luminaries and authors Robert Scoble and Shel Israel presented on the future of technology as iBeacon, wearables, mobile and big data collide to provide users with experiences that transcend the screen and discussed insight from their new book, “Age of Context: Mobile, Sensors, Data and the Future of Privacy.”

Inspiring future generations, Jean MacDonald, founder of App Camp for Girls, along with Editor Kelly Guimont from TUAW and Developer Natalie Osten from Smile Software, conducted a hands-on mini-camp for a group of pre-teens, teenage girls and mentors. Attendees of the Macworld/iWorld App Camp for Girls Open House learned what it takes to develop an app, pursue software development as a career, and inspire and support the next generation of women in technology.

Additionally, famed computer game designer Robyn Miller talked to a room of fans about his experience co-designing “Myst” with yesterday’s technology, and previewed his latest endeavor of writing and directing “The Immortal Augustus Gladstone.”

Hardware Companies Win Over Apps as Innovations to Watch in the Apple Marketplace

San Francisco ––March 28, 2014––Live from the Expo Hall, Macworld/iWorld 2014 attendees and a panel of all-star judges have named the co-winners of the inaugural Macworld/iWorld and SF New Tech 6 About to Break competition. Out of more than 100 entrants, Avegant Glyph and Petcube emerged tied as the overall winners based on their innovative design and technology. 6 About to Break was created to spotlight the most innovative apps, accessories, software, hardware and utilities uniquely positioned to breakout as leaders in the Apple marketplace.

Sponsored by Rackspace, Telerik, VentureBeat, Cult of Mac, and Fast Company, 6 About to Break was held at Macworld/iWorld in San Francisco on Thursday, March 27. The six finalists—AppPresser, Everypost, Glyph, MotionPortrait, Petcube and ReKognition— took to the stage with SF New Tech style presentation:  providing a five minute demo followed by fielding five minutes of questions from the audience. The illustrious judging panel from Cult of Mac, Macworld/iWorld, MeekerQuinn, Quake Labs, SF New Tech and VentureBeat—along with the voting audience—declared Avegant Glyph and Petcube co-winners of the competition.

“To be named a winner in the first-ever 6 About to Break is a tremendous honor because it not only validates Glyph, it gives us unparalleled access and exposure to the Apple ecosystem and marketplace,” said Edward Tang, CEO of Avegant. “The global recognition we have already received from Macworld/iWorld and SF New Tech is phenomenal, and we want to thank them, as well as the judges and fans, for supporting our vision, business and team.”

Glyph is a wearable mobile personal theater device that allows users to experience media with vivid life-like clarity and exceptional sound. The combination of Glyph’s unique flip-down form factor, super sharp imagery and premium noise-canceling audio, revolutionizes personal display technology.

“Petcube will change the way that people interact with their pets, and bring human and pet communication to a whole new level,” said Yaroslav Azhuyuk, CEO and co-founder of Petcube. “We are thrilled to be named a winner in the 6 About to Break competition, which gives us more inspiration to work on our dreams and provides us with exposure to the thousands of Macworld/iWorld attendees.”

Petcube is a home gadget that lets users watch, talk and play laser games with their pet through a mobile phone app. The Petcube iPhone app launched at Macworld/iWorld 2014 and is now available on the App Store. The Petcube device comes in a sleek box that includes a laser pointer, wide angle camera lens, speakers and Wi-Fi.

As winners, Avegant Glyph and Petcube will receive global recognition from IDG, a kiosk at Macworld/iWorld 2014, free hosting from Rackspace, complete Kendo UI and Icenium full product licenses and support from Telerik.

Due to the overwhelming success of the event, Macworld/iWorld and SF New Tech announced today that 6 About to Break will now take place annually at Macworld/iWorld.

“There are many startup competitions that exist, but what makes 6 About to Break unique is our partnership with SF New Tech, enabling us to find, support and promote the very best emerging technology startups tied to Apple innovation,” said Paul Kent, vice president and general manager of Macworld/iWorld and a 6 About to Break judge. “All of the finalists were standouts, but both Avegant Glyph and Petcube emerged as the winner because they exemplify the future of technology. Macworld/iWorld Adds iBeacon and Passbook Technology for Seamless Check-In and Interactive Attendee Scavenger Hunt

03/13/2014

Partnership with Twocanoes Software and Passjoy.com Demonstrates State-of-the-Art Innovations in New Apple Technology at Macworld/iWorld 2014

Framingham, MASS.––March 13, 2014––IDG World Expo today announced its unique integration of Apple’s iBeacon and Passbook technologies into the upcoming Macworld/iWorld 2014  event in March 27-29, 2014, at Moscone Center North in San Francisco.  iBeacon and Passbook are two of most cutting-edge mobile innovations in the Apple ecosystem, and Macworld/iWorld is at the forefront of events using these technologies to enhance attendees’ onsite experiences.  Powered by Twocanoes Software and Passjoy.com, attendees will experience a streamlined check-in at the event using existing Passbook technology already on their phones – no additional app downloads, upgrades or complicated instructions needed. Additionally, this technology will be showcased through the first-ever Macworld/iWorld iBeacon Scavenger Hunt, with prizes for all participants.

The use of iBeacon technology, which is native to iPhone 4S (or any later models) running iOS 7, empowers attendees to quickly and effortlessly check-in at Macworld/iWorld 2014. Instead of using traditional GPS or WiFi technology, which is less accurate indoors, iBeacon uses Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technology, which also benefits users by not draining device batteries. Macworld/iWorld 2014 is able to feature this new technology through partnerships with Twocanoes Software, a creator of groundbreaking Mac, iOS and Beacon hardware, software and apps, and Passjoy.com, a developer of beautiful Passbook and iBeacon user experiences. As attendees enter Moscone North, they will receive an alert via the Passbook app that will display a barcode for express check-in. Bleu Station, a Twocanoes Software device with iBeacon technology, enables passes to be shown automatically on the lock screen of the registered users’ iPhone.

“We are always excited when we get a chance to provide Macworld/iWorld attendees the opportunity to interact with the latest Apple technology at our event,” said Paul Kent, general manager of Macworld/iWorld. “Partnering with Twocanoes Software and Passjoy.com to utilize iBeacon technology and the Passbook App enhances the attendee event experience and is a great example of the innovation we showcase at Macworld/iWorld.”

In addition, Macworld/iWorld, together with Macworld Magazine, is hosting the first official iBeacon Scavenger Hunt using Passbook. To create the iBeacon Scavenger Hunt, Macworld/iWorld enlisted Twocanoes Software and Tom Benson of Passjoy.com to develop the technology. Twocanoes Software provided the beacon-enabled platform for the scavenger hunt and worked with PassJoy.com to create a great user experience with Passbook passes for the game.

The theme for the interactive scavenger hunt is “30 Years of the Mac,” and through a series of clues found on posters throughout the Expo Hall, participants must find and scan four specific 2d barcodes. When an attendee downloads a beacon enabled pass and is in range of a Bleu Station iBeacon, a hint will be presented to find the next beacon-enabled pass. Participants who collect all four beacon-enabled passes will receive a three-month free subscription to Macworld Magazine and will be entered into a drawing for a MacMania cruise to the British Isles.

“iBeacon technology solves a lot of the indoor navigation challenges that other solutions cannot,” said Timothy Perfitt, founder, Twocanoes Software, who together with Tom Benson of Passjoy.com developed the technology behind this functionality. “Macworld/iWorld’s use of our technology is a great example of how to streamline processes while providing a fun, unique and interactive experience for attendees. These uses just scratch the surface of possibilities of iBeacon technology and we look forward to working with Macworld/iWorld to interweave more of this technology throughout future events.”

And the bustling Appalooza section of the show floor was packed with consumers exploring the latest and best new apps for iOS devices, offering dozens of new companies an incomparable platform for bringing products to market.

“We have been to a lot of events, but this is our first Macworld/iWorld and it was, by far, the best we’ve attended in terms of the platform it provided us to demonstrate our CrazyTalk 7 app and reach our target audiences,” said John Martin, vice president, Marketing at Reallusion, Macworld “Best of Show” winner. “The combination of ‘First Looks’ and dedicated ‘Appalooza’ area of the show floor gave us unparalleled exposure to a wide variety of attendees, including consumers, students, industry experts and press, as well as business development opportunities and the chance to connect with fellow developers. We loved our Macworld/iWorld experience and look forward to next year.”

Lights, Camera, Action! Macworld/iWorld 2013 Puts the Spotlight on Filmmaking

12/13/2012

iPhone Film Festival, education sessions, products, and special events with Fred Armisen and the Independent Film Channel celebrate the next generation of film and television

Framingham, Mass.––December 13, 2012––IDG World Expo today announced a full agenda of film education and special events that showcase the evolution in movie making made possible by Apple technologies at Macworld/iWorld 2013 (Twitter: @MacworldExpo; Event hashtag: #iFan13), the Ultimate iFan Event. The lineup includes: the iPhone Film Festival, featuring movies made entirely on iPhones, including the premier of Departure, a collaborative iPhone film shot in three countries; film-related Tech Talks, including an overview of the best video apps, a special talk with Fred Armisen, and a dynamic presentation and Q&A with the creative minds behind the Independent Film Channel’s (IFC) OUT THERE; and an exhibit hall where the newest apps, software tools and accessories to support mobile filmmaking will be on display. Macworld/iWorld takes place January 31-February 2, 2013, at the Moscone Center West in San Francisco. Registration is now open and special pricing runs through January 1.

“Together, the iPhone Film Festival and Macworld/iWorld have provided a unique platform to celebrate the innovative filmmaking taking place on iPhones,” said Ruben Kazantsev, co-creator of the iPhone Film Festival. “While Apple gave us the platform, it’s the myriad of new apps, software and hardware tools that have given life to this evolving art form, and Macworld/iWorld is the place where it all comes together. Attendees should expect to be amazed by what the iPhone Film Festival winners have created and inspired to explore just what is possible using their own iPhone.”

Highlights of the film events at Macworld/iWorld 2013 include:

The iPhone Film Festival

For the second year, Macworld/iWorld has teamed with Ruben Kazantsev and Renata Rinyu, co-founders of the successful iPhone Film Festival, to host filmmakers from around the world as they debut award-winning films and screen never-before-seen movies exclusively for Macworld/iWorld attendees. This year’s line-up includes:

  • Announcement of the iPhone Film Festival 4 Grand Prize Winner and a chance to view footage from some of this year’s top films, all shot using iPhone technology.
  • Premier of Departure, a collaborative film that represents an unchartered concept in filmmaking. From the mind of media trailblazer Ruben Kazanstev, Departure was shot in three separate countries—the United States, France and Belarus—by directors from those regions. Each filmmaker will contribute their assigned footage, shot exclusively on the iPhone, to form one complete, intertwining story that will debut at Macworld/iWorld. This is a first-of-its-kind venture in cost-effective, expeditious, epic filmmaking and a unique opportunity for Macworld/iWorld attendees to see, firsthand, the next generation of movie making.

The screening will be followed by a panel and Q&A during which attendees can hear from the directors—Christophe Nizou from France, Satie Gossett from the U.S. and Maria Kuracheva from Belarus—as well as writer Jimmy Borto, about the creative process behind iPhone filmmaking.

  • A screening of the music video for “Killing Time” by the band All the Pretty Cars, which was filmed, animated and mixed using only an iPhone 4, lots of construction paper and patience. Named “Best Music Video” at the 2012 iPhone Film Festival, the screening will be followed by a special live performance of the song by Gea Gamboa of The Cleopatra Complex.

All iPhone Film Festival events are included as part of the iFAN Pass Package.

Film Tech Talks

The Macworld/iWorld 2013 agenda boasts more than 60 new educational sessions, interactive panel discussions, practical “how-to” presentations and “tips and tricks” learning opportunities with several focused on movie making, including:

  • “Q&A with Fred Armisen.” Best known as a punk rock drummer, cast member on Saturday Night Live, co-creator and co-star of IFC’s Portlandia, Armisen is also a technophile. Listen in as he chats with Macworld Senior Editor Chris Breen about how he uses Apple technology to empower his creativity and identifies the products he can’t live without.
  • OUT THERE: Behind the Scenes of IFC’s newest animated comedy.” Hear from Emmy-winning Director and Producer Ryan Quincy and members of his creative team as they share the creative and technical secrets behind how their new animated series, OUT THERE, evolved from a kernel of an idea into a full 10-episode season. OUT THERE follows the coming-of-age adventures of Chad, his little brother Jay and best friend Chris. The show staff will share video outtakes and clips from the yet-to-air premier episode, as well as discuss their behind-the-scenes creative process followed by live audience Q&A.
  • “The Studio in Your Pocket,” a workshop with Michael Koerbel and Anna Elizabeth James, iPhone filmmakers at Majek Pictures, will explore the latest video, photography and audio apps for both iPhone and iPad.
  • “Life, Camera, Action: Ideas, innovation and images on the go. How mobile image capture is altering how we interact with the world,” a special brown bag lunch sponsored by FiLMiC Pr with filmmakers Neill Barham and Michael Koerbel and cinematographer Jonathan Houser.

Fresh off a tall ship cruise in the Caribbean, Barham, Koerbel and Houser will take attendees on a mystical journey through the Windward Islands on a tour de force demonstration of mobile media apps in action. The sheer power of high-definition mobile capture is transforming not just the travel industry, but more importantly the very nature of travel itself and the way we engage, understand and share the world. In this spirited and evocative session, the FiLMiC mobile misfits will share stories of their adventures from the Caribbean and earlier mobile trips to the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea. Detailing the progression in video capabilities from the early iPhone 4 days, on up to the 4S, the 5 and the new iPad, as well as what each hardware iteration has brought to the table, this session will be replete with delicious, real-world exotic travel video and documentary footage. Additionally, hear stories and anecdotes about all sorts of gear road tested under aggressive travel conditions, and get an insider’s view of the winners and the losers in the accessories market, and hear battled-tested advice on what to buy and what to avoid.

“Apple technology has played a central role in much of my creative life—whether it’s editing Portlandia episodes on my iPad or playing Steve Jobs on SNL—so I’m especially excited to come to Macworld/iWorld to share my experiences with fellow iFans, delve into how I use these tools to bring my vision to life, and offer some tips on the products that help propel my work,” said Fred Armisen. “I promise you’ll learn something and maybe even leave with a few laughs.”

Expo Hall: A Showcase of Film Products

The Macworld/iWorld 2013 expo hall will feature hundreds of exhibitors and developers—more than 40 percent of which are first-time exhibitors—showcasing the latest hardware, software, apps and accessories for the Mac, iPhone, iPod and iPad. Macworld | iWorld Announces All New Content, Event Highlights and Exhibitors

01/04/12

Appalooza Contest, Celebrity Tech Talks, RISE Electronic DJ Battle and Bash, and Exhibitor Product Announcements Complete Dynamic, Unparalleled Program of Content and Special Events Slated for the Ultimate iFan Celebration

Framingham, MA––January 4, 2012––Kicking off the month in which Macworld | iWorld takes place, IDG World Expo today announced a slew of new content and event highlights. These include: new Tech Talks developed in conjunction with Superfly Presents and Theatrics, creators of the Mass Participation TV series; the unveiling of three DJs selected to compete in the RISE Electronic Music DJ Battle & Bash; the winners of the “Appalooza – The Greatest Apps of All Time” contest; and a list exhibitors participating in both the Mobile Apps Showcase and the recently announced OS X Zone.

Today’s announcements complement a full agenda of music, film and art events, including performances, screenings, workshops and galleries, developed to celebrate the intersection of technology and art, as well as a vibrant show floor that serves as a true reflection of today’s evolving iOS marketplace. Macworld | iWorld will take place January 26 – January 28, 2012, at the Moscone Center – West Hall in San Francisco.

IDG World Expo has joined forces with Superfly Presents, the entertainment and marketing agency responsible for world-class music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Outside Lands and Life is Good, to bring attendees two special Tech Talks focused on the impact of Apple technology on the film and music industries, respectively. The sessions include:

  • “The Creators” panel featuring recording artist Fitz of Fitz and The Tantrums, director Brad Furman known for his work on the “The Lincoln Lawyer” and “The Take,” and additional panelists to be announced. The session will explore how Apple technology has been vital in the development of the modern-day artistic process. Today’s artists are producing work faster, with finer detail, and with more independence than ever before. Superfly has chosen this select group of notable artists to discuss how Apple technology provides new platforms for effectively reaching their audiences.
  • “Music and Marketing” with Jamie Sampson of SoundTracking, Jordan Kurland of Zeitgeist Artist Management and additional panelists to be announced shortly. This panel will examine how the establishment of a deep connection between artist and audience is vital to attain commercial success. The tools and functionality to reach audiences have never been more diverse and accessible. This panel will showcase select music industry professionals who will discuss how Apple technology has allowed artists to engage directly with their fans/followers, about how mobile music apps are being utilized via Apple technology, and what innovative developments lay ahead.

The IDG World Expo/Superfly Presents partnership also includes the opening night kick-off concert with Modest Mouse.

Additionally, a Tech Talk produced in collaboration with Theatrics, creators of the first Mass Participation TV series, focuses on the impact of social media and technology on collaborative story telling. Theatrics’ Mass Participation TV series “Beckinfield” is the only social TV experience where anyone can create a character and play a part in a professional, plot-driven show.

  • Theatrics presents “‘Beckinfield’ – Mass Participation TV with a Special Performance by Jonathan Frakes.” As noted by Wired.com, Mass Participation TV (MPTV) “takes social media to the 9th degree.” In this special session, Bob Gebert and Tracy Evans of Theatrics––the creators of “Beckinfield” the world’s first Mass Participation TV series––pull back the curtain and reveal the origins of their project, the production technology at play and the story behind the story. Jonathan Frakes, who plays Dylan Marks in the series, will be on stage announcing the winner of the Ultimate Online Audition Contest at Macworld | iWorld; that winner will receive $10,000 and a trip to Hollywood with a friend. A special segment of “Beckinfield” will be filmed live as part of Frakes’ guest appearances in the series with the Macworld | iWorld audience joining the story line by playing the part of “Beckinfield” residents. Bob, Tracy and Jonathan will discuss the project in depth, show story videos and unveil all about the Macworld | iWorld story line.

For 12 days in December, Macworld | iWorld hosted “Appalooza – The Greatest Apps of All Time” contest, a mobile app contest designed to celebrate today’s vibrant iOS marketplace. Voters cast ballots for their favorite iOS apps and helped create an ultimate list of the greatest apps in categories ranging from games to lifestyle to music-photo and social apps. After thousands of votes were cast, Macworld | iWorld is excited to present the top five highest vote getters: Touch Retouch, Blues Masters, Splashtop Remote Desktop, Turbo Viewer and Legendary Wars. A full list of winning apps can be found at: http://apps.facebook.com/offerpop/Contest.psp?c=54109&u=14562&a=254553244581393&p=58481436623&rest=0&v=Results.

Many of the apps highlighted as part of Appalooza will be available to see and try at Macworld | iWorld’s Mobile Apps Showcase. One of the most popular areas of the extensive show floor, the Mobile Apps Showcase offers attendees unparalleled opportunities to see, try and learn about the latest iPad, iPhone and iPod innovations directly from more than 100 developers who created them. Exhibiting companies include: App Creation Network, Brainshark, Inc., Clear-Media, Fierce Wombat Games, Infomato, Inc., KoamTac, NeoPlay Entertainment, Penpower Inc, Red Robot Labs, Smile, TriceraSoft, WillowTree Apps and XMG Studio, to name a few.

New to the exhibit hall in 2012, the OS X Zone is a special area of the show floor dedicated to showcasing innovations from OS X software developers, the most in-demand category of products requested by Macworld | iWorld attendees each year. Interest in the OS X Zone has been strong and participating companies will include: BusyMac, CHL Software, Codo, Coladia, Connected Accounting and ERP, Dev-Audio Pty Ltd, e3 Software, FileThis, Flexibits Inc., Geekjam LLC, Karelia Software, Left Coast Logic, Mapdiva LLC, RAGE Software, RealMac Software, Sheep Systems, Smile, SoftClouds, Sparrow, Splasm Software and Widget Press.

A full list of exhibitors can be found at: http://www.macworldiworld.com/exhibitor-list/.

The RISE Electronic Music DJ Battle & Bash, which will bring together electronic music DJs using Apple technologies to compete in a club environment and feature a special performance by platinum-selling electronic artist BT, has unveiled the three finalists who will compete for the grand prize of $1,000. Selected from more than 100 submissions, these DJs will battle in front of a live audience and a panel of judges that includes some of today’s hottest and most innovative DJs, including DJ Solomon, DJ Dani Deahl and DJ Ean Golden.

  • Alexander (Alex) Sibley of San Francisco who is rapidly climbing up the ranks of California’s vibrant house/techno scene. From having his tracks get played out in clubs around the world to DJing shows around the bay area at some of the biggest venues/parties (Lovevolution at Oakland coliseum, Ruby Skye in SF, Supperclub, etc.) his sets have always impressed, bringing a unique twist to tech house and techno. Alex has had the privilege to play alongside Alex Kenji, Moby, Pendulum, The Glitch Mob, Markus Schultz, DJ Reza, Gareth Emery, Darude, Serge Devant, Kill the Noise and Treasure fingers.
  • Dustin Delany (AKA Nisus) who moves dance floors, flowing seamlessly through electro bangers to womping dubstep explosions with tech-funk tweaks. His productions are whipped up electronic analog bass frenzies that initially gained momentum when he won the Outside Lands remix contest. Since then he has performed at 2010′s Treasure Island Music Festival, SF’s yearly Lovefest and Coachella. He is San Francisco based and is also a contributing writer for DJTechTools.com; as a resident for Basthaus he supported a wide-range of up-and-coming DJs at some of the best clubs in the world.
  • DJ GeoD of San Francisco who since the age of 13 has immersed himself in the world of hip hop and electronica. With roots in turntablism and representing the hard-hitting progressive/dutch house genre in his sets, Geo-D is a whole different animal who brings “old guard” techniques that obliterate the usual “press play” acts of today’s scene. He has collaborated and played with acts in the hip hop industry and the electronica scene and, bringing in flavors that echo Laidback Luke’s fierce crowd presence and DJ Vice’s tenacity on the decks, commands respect from the start of his sets.

Macworld | iWorld offers attendees a full slate of new show elements debuting in 2012—including the Music Experience, Film Event, Art Experience and more than 75 Tech Talks—as well as attendee-favorite programs that include a dynamic exhibit floor featuring hundreds of companies showcasing the latest in software, hardware, peripherals, accessories and applications for the Apple products platform, networking events and meet ups, unique shopping opportunities and workshops that take attendees inside OS X Lion, iOS 5 and key third-party products.

12/19/11

Special Art Events include Sessions with Digital Art Pioneer Bert Monroy and Best-Selling Author Susan Orlean, Digital Art Showings, iPad Sketch Station, Super Art Fight and Tech Talks

Framingham, MA––December 19, 2011––IDG World Expo today announced special events taking place at Macworld | iWorld celebrating the impact of Apple technology on literature and the visual arts, including a feature presentation and on-site exhibit by acclaimed digital photo-realist artist, author and lecturer Bert Monroy and conversation with author and self-proclaimed geek Susan Orlean, as well as the Digital Art Gallery, iPad Sketch Station, an exhibition of art inspired by South Park, Super Art Fight tournament and a host of art-focused Tech Talks.

These art and literature events complement a full slate of new show elements debuting in 2012—including the Music Experience and Film Event—as well as attendee favorite Macworld | iWorld programs, such as a dynamic product exhibit floor featuring hundreds of companies showcasing the latest in software, hardware, peripherals, accessories and applications for the Apple products platform, networking events and meet ups, unique shopping opportunities, workshops and more than 75 Tech Talks that take attendees inside OS X Lion, iOS 5 and key third-party products. Macworld | iWorld will take place January 26 – January 28, 2012, at the Moscone Center – West Hall in San Francisco.

This year, Macworld | iWorld presents Featured Artist Bert Monroy, whose on-site exhibit and presentation will offer attendees a historical look at art on the Mac. After a long career in advertising, Bert discovered computers with the introduction of the Macintosh 128 in 1984 and embarked on a new digital career. He embraced the computer as an artistic medium and today is considered one of the pioneers of digital art. An accomplished teacher and lecturer, Bert has served on the faculty of a list of institutions that include The School of Visual Arts in New York and currently teaches at San Francisco State University. Bert was a monthly regular on Tech TV for more than three years and recently hosted Pixel Perfect with Bert Monroy, a weekly Photoshop podcast for Revision3.com. Bert’s gallery presentation will be a history lesson featuring his early work from 1984 done in MacPaint and moving through time with the evolution of graphics software to his present work using Photoshop. His session will show the present power of the technology to create whatever your imagination can conjure up.

“I’m a hyper-realist artist with a passion for making things happen on the screen,” said Bert Monroy. “Because my paintings look like photographs, I’m often asked why I don’t just take a photograph. For me, it’s all about finding a new way of doing something and uncovering a new room in my imagination. Apple technologies have given me the tools to unleash my creative spirit and re-create reality in ways I never could have imagined just five years ago. I am excited to share my art, my journey and my passion at Macworld | iWorld.”

A Conversation with Susan Orlean, Author and Geek brings together influential New Yorker magazine staff writer, best-selling author and technophobe turned technophile Susan Orlean for a discussion with Glenn Fleishman, technology writer for the Seattle Times, The Economist and Macworld. A writer for magazines as varied as Vogue, Esquire, Rolling Stone, and Smithsonian, Susan has been on staff for the New Yorker since 1992 and is the bestselling author of eight books, including “The Orchid Thief,” which was made into the Oscar-winning movie “Adaptation.” The owner of a plethora of Macs and iOS devices, Susan uses Apple technology daily for research, communication and writing. She also has mastered being a long-form, non-fiction writer in the era of Twitter, amassing nearly 200,000 followers while writing a blog on the New Yorker‘s Web site. In her session, Susan will provide insight into her creative process and the tools she uses in her work, including how the iPad helped her write her latest book, “Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend,” a New York Times bestseller and a Notable book of 2011.

“A long-time Mac user and fan—I am proud to call myself a geek—I’m passionate about how new Apple tools, including my coveted iPad, have helped my writing move to new heights. They’ve made me more productive and, most importantly, more creative,” said Susan Orlean. “My talk will be a chance for me to share my experience and offer some insights and lessons for budding writers and other creative people looking to use today’s technological innovations to take their craft, whatever it may be, to the next level.”

Additional art-inspired events will take place in Macworld | iWorld’s Midway, where a collection of attractions give attendees an opportunity to experience iOS and OS X products and technologies across the arts and education in unique and engaging ways. Highlights include:

Modest Mouse to Headline Macworld | iWorld Kick-Off Celebration

12/05/2011

Event Announces Partnership with Superfly Productions; Indie Rock Veterans Will Kick Off Three Days of Tech, Music and Film Events

Framingham, MA––December 5, 2011––IDG World Expo today announced that indie rock powerhouse Modest Mouse will headline the Macworld | iWorld 2012 launch party on Wednesday, January 25 at The Warfield in San Francisco. IDG World Expo, which owns and produces Macworld | iWorld, also announced its partnership with Superfly Productions, the entertainment and marketing agency responsible for world-class music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Outside Lands and Life is Good. Superfly and IDG World Expo will produce the opening night kick-off concert with Modest Mouse and host two special Tech Talks sessions that will focus on the impact of Apple technology on the film and music industries, respectively.

“We see this kick-off celebration with Modest Mouse as a perfect way to launch the new Macworld | iWorld,” said Paul Kent, vice president and general manager of Macworld | iWorld. “Veteran and new attendees alike will enjoy this event. Modest Mouse has become an indie rock standard and one of the few bands capable of treading the narrow path where massive popularity is possible without sacrificing their longtime fans. In a way, we feel this is in line with our own evolution into a celebration of the entire Apple ecosystem and its tremendous impact on the creative process.”

Tickets for the launch party are now available. Macworld | iWorld iFan pass holders will have the first option to purchase tickets for just $35.

Formed in 1993 in Issaquah, Washington, Modest Mouse released three critically-acclaimed albums––”This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About” in 1996 and “The Lonesome Crowded West” in 1997, both on the Up label, and “The Moon and Antarctica” in 2000, the band’s major label debut for Epic Records––before their commercial breakthrough “Good News For People Who Love Bad News” in 2004. The album, which included the hit “Float On,” earned the band two Grammy nominations. In 2007, Modest Mouse released “We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank,” which entered the Billboard Top 200 chart at #1.

Macworld | iWorld will take place January 26 – January 28, 2012, at the Moscone Center – West Hall in San Francisco. The opening night kick-off celebration is another new event offering for the 2012 event. Additional new programs include expanded product exhibit offerings, the Macworld Midway, Tech Talks, Music Experience, Film Event and Art Galleries. Admission to the opening night kick-off celebration requires an additional registration fee.

“We live in an incredible time, technologically speaking, and the evolution of the Apple products ecosystem over the past decade has been a driving force in that,” said Rich Goodstone, co-founder of Superfly Productions. “It’s exciting for us to be a part of Macworld | iWorld, an event that is defining the intersection of art and technology.”

Additional events, performances, workshops, shopping, educational programming and networking opportunities will be announced in the coming weeks.
